In celebration of Black History Month 1997, the San Diego Historical society presented a special photograph and document exhibition, entitled "Looking Back with Pride, Looking Around with Respect, Looking Ahead with Confidence," from February 1 through March 2, 1997 at the Museum of San Diego History in Balboa Park, in the Casa de Balboa building.

Ever since the crew of explorer Juan Cabrillo sailed to Alta California in 1542, people of African descent have maintained a vital presence in San Diego and made unique contributions to the history and development of the region. African Americans have played an important role in all eras of San Diego history, from soldiers at the 18th century Presidio, to Buffalo Soldiers of World War II, to political leaders, Olympic athletes and scholars of present day.

"Looking Back with Pride, Looking Around with Respect, Looking Ahead with Confidence" features 100 images and documents from the daily life of African Americans in San Diego, placed in historical context with information panels below the photos. Photographs depict diverse topics including religious, political and business leaders, role models, educators, artists, journalists and performers. Dedicated to African American youth of our community, the exhibition also features positive images of Black youth and highlights their honors, awards and achievements.

The exhibition also featured three standing figures of prominent African Americans, contemporary publications by African American authors, and 19th century documents including brochures of African American organizations, and personal memorabilia saved by local families.

Any church, school or community group may arrange to display the exhibition at no cost, if they provide their own transportation of the exhibition to their site and back to the San Diego Historical Society. To schedule dates and make arrangements, call Sally West at (619) 232-6203, x 123.
